Living in a quiet and peaceful place in France, far away from the hustle and bustle of big cities and the turmoil of our world, is the perfect environment for Nico to run free in his artistic passion. The nowadays 41-years old created a huge amount of artwork for the Psytrance scene, from CD covers to flyers to logos, web stuff and much more. He also created the logo for mushroom’s Freakplanet tour, which you can see on the cover of this issue as well as on the party flyers.

Can you please tell us a little about the cover motive, which is also the logo of the Freakplanet tour?

First, I talked to Mat from mushroom mag to know what exactly he wanted, and then I heard it should be the flyer for a mushroom party tourI drew all the design by hand, then again in Illustrator to convert the drawing into an utilizable computer file. Finally I put it in Photoshop to create all the lights, effects, etc. It’s a creation more complex than others because it was originally hand-drawn. I really like this one because it’s a personal fun design without bad vibes, and I really like mushrooms in real life, they’re like a key for the mind, really great for relaxing and exploring other layers of reality.

You did a lot of artwork for the Psytrance scene. What were your most exciting projects?

I’m working mainly for the Psytrance scene since more than 20 years now. Before design, I made some deco and some clothes, too. For me, every design is a new world and I start all over again each time, which allows me to experiment constantly with new techniques. I wouldn’t take a project saying it’s more important than another – they each have a history and evolution.

How do you work, which technologies do you use?

I’m working with several techniques, like cartoon drawing and technical drawing. Also, I use around 30 computer programmes (2D, 3D, vector, video, web, etc…), it depends of what I need to create a design. I’m curious about everything and my passion is still intact, it even becomes more intense year after year.

What was the biggest compliment you received as an artist?

When my kids said: ‘Wow! Daddy you’re a wizard!’

Which kind of art do you personally like?

I love the Art Deco style, the surrealists, Flemish art for the outstanding light, Asian art in general and everything about ancient civilizations for architecture and complexity.

Anything left to say?

I really hope that the future will give us more and more time and space to do what we still dream of – loads of peace, love and heavy fun! Apropos: I am currently working on a calendar for 2012, which will be available for free download. So keep an eye on my website, I will put online a ready-to-print version very soon!
