Self-Portrait of Ital: Paint your soul!

What influenced you to get into your field?
I always was involved with music, since the 14 years old. My career began with playing the guitar, percussions and start being a DJ (of all styles of music) when I was 16years old. Since then, I always felt that I loved to make the people dance, make them have a good time and enjoying been a Dj doing my job at best. When I got in psytrance music in 2001, my influence was for sure our mother nature, who showed me the connection that we can have with her and to give and make the transmission through the music, to other human beings. Also a big influence for me, was my roots in reggae music, classic rock and psychedelic music from the past.

As an artist, what role do you think you play in society?
For me Music is a way of channeling the energy from the universe, and I feel, that my and our mission (talking about a global purpose) is to give this energy in different ways through the art to the people.

I think through the art, in my case with the music, we can expand the consciousness and reconnect our self with our essence. In this way we can generate a better and awake society.

Creating on a regular basis can be a bloody tough job, so what motivates you to press yourself into the workstation every single day?
As I said before, music is what I love, what I feel I need to give in this life, my motivation of everyday, filling our hearts with joy and passion, and give this feeling to our planet and people, makes me continue. As every art, could be a difficult to live just with the music, as a way for life, but we must never lose hope, with faith and hard work anything is possible and materializable.

Do you get nervous before a performance?
Well, I have been doing this for 15years now, some years ago of course I got nervous, more in the biggest and most important events, but in this days no anymore hehehe

What’s the story behind your artist name and project?
Well, I had the first contact with psytrance in Ecuador in South America, strange place because over there never had been a psytrance scene.

In that time (2001), I met my partner Andres, and since then we start our first psy project called “metatron”.

Then on 2004, I created my own solo project “Ital” influenced by rastafari culture. I always love reggae music, and I was so connected with reggae, that I choose a spiritual and beautiful concept from them for my psytrance project. Ital means Purity in Patois, Indian dialect used by rastafaris in Africa, and the concept was used to talk about the ital life (pure life), ital food (pure food), etc..

What other genres of music do you listen to? Name your influences.
Reggae, Rock, World Music, Medicine Music and different styles of South American Music.

Has the process of making music transformed you? In what way?
Always music is transforming us, giving us happiness, peace, love and getting our spirituality higher and higher every day. Is my way to reconnect myself to our essence, find our mission in life and never forget that: all together we are 1 love, 1 heart, 1 soul, protected by the universe, god, great spirit, cosmos, however you want to call it.

What’s your biggest temptation or vice, what can you not resist?
I love to cook my own food with my wife, nothing better that share some homemade food made with love. I also love to go into nature with friends, to do trekking and go out of the city to see all the love that our mother nature gave to us.

Face-off: Let’s get the grits on the table:

What quality do you admire the most in others? What quality do you like about yourself the most?
Well, one of the most important quality for me and that I see in others too, is to put our ego down. I think life is simple and we just need to be simple people to be happy.

Which phase was the hardest/scariest in your life?
A phase that was difficult for me, was when I wanted to be a musician, and dedicate my life to the music, and my parents didn’t like that idea, but in some way I also understand them. Because here in Chile (my country) as many others places, is so difficult to be a musician and make a living by the music, but we need to believe in our dreams, because everything is possible. Here in Chile we don’t have any support from the government and they don’t invest to much in culture, so there is not to much opportunities if you want to live through the art. Most of the people with some talent in any art need to go out of the country to develop their self, and sometimes it’s not easy for sure. I feel very lucky that I could make my dream true, live by the music.

When have you been most satisfied in your life? Care to share one of your happiest memories?
Well, I think life is full of happy moments, we need to be grateful everyday just to be alive. But for sure, one of the happiest moment, related to psytrance music, was when I played in Universo Paralello Festival 2004-2005 in Brazil, it was the most important gig for me at that time, where could show to the world a little bit of my music and passion.

Everyone starts somewhere, what was your first job before you got into music?
As I told at the beginning of the interview, I started to be a DJ since I was 16years old, now I’m 35 heheeh so, when I was very young I was playing popular music in Chile in school, private, bdays parties, etc… with that I could do some money that I invest with the time in some more equipments, speakers, etc growing little by little, but my job was always related to music. Then when I was out of school, me and friends started to do some parties and we continue playing music, never stopping.

At that time, I also entered in the university (1999), where I studied for 7 year in different places, 2 years engineer in economy (to make my parents happy) but after I quiet because I didn’t like it at all, then 1 year music, where I wanted to be a guitar player but I realized that wasn’t for me for the rest of my life and then 4 years engineering in sound, what I finished and where I learn a lot about audio and psycho acoustic, but at the end I never worked as an engineer in sound (and also I did it to make my parents happy having a diploma or something). But I was always doing psytrance music since the beginning and since the first contact in 2001, and since then, I felt that psy music was what I need to devote for the rest of my life.

Flash-forward in time. You are now really old. What would you tell your children/loved ones?
Do what you love, do what you feel, expand your soul and consciousness and just be, And you always will have my support.

Into the time machine again. What do you miss about being a kid?
Have no worries

Excessive chopping dulls the axe. Time-outs are a must. What do you do when you take time off from creating? Got any hobbies? (Books? Movies? TV shows?)
I love to meet my family, my friends (the family that we choose) and go out of the city with them and my partner, to reconnect our spirit once again. I live in the mountains with my girl, little bit out of the city too, but is always good to go to a new place and feel different kinds and fresh energies around. Movies and some nice food always is good.

Ideology of Ital: Beliefs that bake your brain:

The genie comes out of the lamp and grants you one wish that will change the world. What would you wish for?
Light, Love and Peace for all human beings.

How do you connect to the spiritual side of yourself?
Through the nature and music.

Do you have any belief/beliefs that you cannot do without?
I believe in one great and higher consciousness (universe, god, great spirit, etc) that control everything in our life, that decide what will happened in every moment, every little simple thing is written, and we need to awake about that. so, we just need to have faith and realize that everything that happened, good or bad, is a sign, and is happening for something, and we need to understand that everything happens in right moment of our life.

On the Scene:

Where do you think psytrance is headed? Future trends?
I think our scene is growing really fast, so many events and festivals around the globe, and the new generations are coming full power to be part of the amazing scene, giving energy and happiness. I hope every year new festivals will start, and the expansion for psytrance culture with grow in every corner around the planet.

What do you think of the scene at the present moment? What would you like changed or what would like to see remain at status quo?
Our Scene is beautiful. So many people connecting their self through the music and expanding their hearts through the dance, like 1 love tribe.

Piracy, works out negatively for the artist, but it allows listeners’ to access music that would otherwise be hard to source. Art should be shared…in this light what are your thoughts on piracy vs. a price tag?
What to do in this days, internet and technology has evolved in this way, and we need to go in the same direction, nothing to do. In some way is good as you said, more people will have the access to listen our music and from specifics artists that they like, but about the sales for the labels is not really good, but what to do. Music industry has developed in this way, and in this days musicians make their life doing performance and not selling cds.

Pearls: Words of Wisdom for reader and fans:

At the end of the ride, everyone’s looking for some form of success (tangible or not), what does success mean to you?
Success for me, I think is to be remembered for something that you did. Could be music or any art, sport, whatever… but if you did and expanded your mission with a purpose and intention in this life, people will remember you for something special you left, your legacy.

We are almost done. Give us a nutshell of the life philosophy/motto/mantra that you clutch close to your heart.
Everything is possible, when you make it with love, and others will feel it very strong.

What’s the best advice you have ever received?

Just be you and follow your dreams.

One word to describe yourself, and one word to describe music.
Me:  be happy and simple, Music:  Higher energy.
