Question:

I want to buy Peyote cactus for a trip. How much do I need?

Answer:

This question is not so easy to answer, since many factors play a role regarding dosage. First of all, every individual reacts differently to certain chemicals and certain dosages. Also, it depends on what kind of trip you’re after. And last but not least, the content of mescaline –the active substance- in peyote buttons is not constant. It varies from 1-5% of total weight in dried buttons, and 0,2-0,3% in fresh buttons.

When in doubt, you better take it slowly. It is important to realize peyote is not really a ‘recreational drug’. Mescaline brings you in a hallucinogenic state that can potentially have a psychotic feel. Like any other strong psycho-active drug, you should only use peyote when feeling safe and positive, because the drug will fortify your emotions. Never trip on a new sustance by yourself.

Erowid gives an indication of dosages, based on data gathered from users, research and other resourced. However, these guidelines should not be used as straightforward recommendations, because as said before: people can respond very differently to the same dosage.

This is the suggested dosage of fresh peyote:

50-100 gram for a light trip (3-6 mid-sized buttons)

100-150 gram for a medium trip (6-12 buttons)

150-200 gram for a strong trip (8-16 buttons)

200+ gram for a heavy trip – only try this as a very experienced user (15+ buttons)

This is the suggested dosage of dried peyote:

10-20 gram for a light trip (3-6 mid-sized buttons)

20-30 gram for a medium trip (6-12 buttons)

30-40 gram for a strong trip (8-16 buttons)

40+ gram for a heavy trip – only try this as a very experienced user (15+ buttons)

As you can see: whether fresh or dry, generally the same number of buttons are consumed.
