Qubenzis Psy Audio is an electronic music project started by Ricky (aka QPA), who originally is from Sweden. He is a producer of his own original sound inspired by psychedelic trance. Ricky, being a multi instrumentalist, played music his whole life, different genres, both as a musician and producer.

After profound experiences with the psychedelic trance scene in Copenhagen where he lived during the late nineties, especially a particular Eat Static live concerts, he became hooked on the style. After moving to Spain he eventually started to dj the genre around 2006.

By 2007 he finally started recording psychedelic trance music under the name Qubenzis Psy Audio. 2010 he released his first Psytrance album. By 2014, QPA released 5 albums within the psytrance genre. When performing it’s all about the Dj experience. His sets usually consist of mainly Qubenzis’ own production mixed with various tracks from other psychedelic trance producers. He offers a guaranteed bouncy, musical and very dance provoking experience based on a Full On Goa type vibe.

Your life-story and relationship with your work

Tell us a little about you and your work:
I love to read manuals. Every time I come unto a hurdle in my work I don’t hesitate to read about the functions I didn’t understand instead of wasting hours experimenting and speculating. But I also love to just dig into a new program or synthesizer to see if I intuitively can manage to figure out how it works. After many years of producing one might come a long way before having to read the manual. I learned about myself that I always find something new in the tracks I work with that I want to change or make better. It’s sometimes hard to let go and call a new track finished. I also found out that it always helps to put tracks on hold for a while, waiting for a few days even weeks, before going at them again with a fresh ear.

Currently what projects are you working on? And what future plans have you chalked out for yourself?:
We got this amazing outdoor site here in Spain, where I currently live, that we intend to make into a party venue. So now I’m promoting the next psytrance event there called LOSTWORLD PSY Winter Solstice Party 2014. It’s going to take place the 19th of December until the 21st. Two nights of full on party in this beautiful valley with pine trees around it. Since it’s the first time “test” party we cant pay djs any wages (except for promising an equal share if we make money). So the dj lineup is so far very sparse. Though we for sure will find artists who are willing to take the chance, being part of the crew and getting the opportunity to play a set on this awesome party site. anunusualleopard Right now I’m also working on the mastering of recordings made together with dmcq. We have a project live band called anunusualleopard where we play live creating weird sondscapes, beats, FX and generally experimental music. Not at all very EDM or psytrance related music. All our recordings were made without any pre-rehearsals, entirely improvised. Though when I master the music I do cut out a lot from what we recorded, only keeping enough to make a 1 hour album out of perhaps 5 hours of recording. Then I spend quite some time to editing the sounds, cleaning out unwanted notes and noises, even re-arranging the music until it becomes a track I’m content with. The last album we made I left more of the recordings “as is” but this time I intend to make the music sounding more “produced”. One or two of the tracks almost sound like proper experimental EDM (= dancable)

What influenced you to get into your field?:
I made music my whole life. I’m a natural in that regard. I play many instruments and always found it easy to make music. However, the problem always was to organize it into something “serious” in the sense of that I actually can make a living from making and playing music. After I had my “initiation” into psychedelic trance, enjoying it as a consumer, I decided to produce EDM and psychedelic trance music myself. It was for me a natural turning point, since I any way were producing and making music. The only difference was that I then more seriously focused on a specific genre as well as the role of being a dj. In order for the music I’d produced to be played in the right setting I decided that the best suited dj for doing so would be me myself, right?

As an artist, what role do you think you play in society?:
Inspirator

You obviously love what you do…but what do you love the most about your work?:
The inner peace it brings while doing what I feel is the right thing to do, what I came to this planet for in the first place. The spontaneous, often deep, contact I get with like minded people I come across through working with music. How the interest in music breaks borders. When people from very different backgrounds, age groups etc. just connect and cast all pretensions, enjoying together.

Creating on a regular basis can be a bloody tough job, so what motivates you to press yourself into the workstation every single day?:
Good question… since I specifically this year have been very lazy. I felt I needed a break from at least the psytrance production. Though, typically I then end up doing the mastering and release of other music I made together with anunusualleopard. To answer the question: survival and a persistent mind set. I’m the type that never give up, no matter what. If I set out to do something I usually try to finalise it. So if I started to produce an album I simply can’t stop until it’s ready.
Everybody has to start somewhere, usually at the bottom of the ladder, either as the bus-boy or the shoe-shiner. What was the very first job you had?:

Bakery… want some hot bread?
What is your second love? What’s the alternative career path you would have travelled if you were not on the one you are right now?:
It’s definitely not my second love any more, but my career path probably would have been engineering of some sort, or perhaps professional athlete.

Share your experiences and your characteristics/personality

Everybody’s got favourites…so what’s your favourite work/piece among everything that you’ve designed/produced/dj-ed/created? (Link us up!):
Okay, here are two of my fav tracks. They are fairly old ones and they’re not particularly popular either, but I still love ’em. The first one is called “Cosmic Embryo” and is kind of ambient music. And the second is called “Perceptional Enhancer” and is a some kind of dark electro bordering to drum and base.

When have you been most satisfied in your life? Care to share one of your happiest memories?:
Well, there are many happy memories to refer to but one definitely was when I won a Native Instruments SERATO hardware in a dj website competition. You know, the in-between box that makes it possible to play your computer music files with real CD players or turntables. I didn’t want one so I sold it on Ebay and bought a new Laptop for the money, also on Ebay. Then I became really happy 🙂

Habits die hard. Which one word always creeps in your speech?:
Hey, I’d hope this interview would remain civilized…

Knock, knock, we want to hear a good joke.:
Three sharp shooters had a competition. The first one said “See that tree branch over there”? “Yes” the others replied. He shot and the branch snapped. The second one said “See that stone over there, far away…” “Yes” the others replied. He shot and the stone split in pieces. The third one said: “See that fly buzzing near the tree over there” “Yes” the others replied. He shot and the fly was still buzzing away. “You missed” the other two disappointedly told him. “No I didn’t” he happily replied, “That fly can’t make children any more”

There’s a book on the shelf. It’s your autobiography. What does the title say?:
Shredded Improbabilities

Flash-forward in time. You are now really old. What would you tell your children/loved ones?:
Go for your dreams. Don’t let negative attitude people get in your way.

Into the time machine again. What do you miss about being a kid?:
Not having to worry to much about “grown up peoples” stuff.

Your hobbies and other fun questions

Excessive chopping dulls the axe. Time-outs are a must. What do you do when you take time off from creating? Got any hobbies?:
I love to read real books that I can feel between my hands. Also listening to radio interviews with odd researchers within the occult, philosophical, archaeology, science and the UFO investigation field. Often I practise with the Bo (Chinese staff). Or just enjoying nature and the company of animals gives me big pleasure. Enjoying the company with friends, discussing deep matters of life. Helping friends with whatever I can do for them, just for the sake of helping. Swimming, and finding the best places for doing so… beaches… lakes… diving from cliffs. Web design. And getting into the depth of my Linux based computer. I love the nerdy side of things, optimizing the system.

What’s the last movie/T.V show you saw or book/magazine you read?:
Book – Magic and Mystery in Tibet by Alexandra David Neel TV Show – Star Trek Deep Space 9

Name your all time favourite movie/show/book.:
Honestly, there isn’t a favourite book or movie of mine since there are SO many excellent ones that I simply find it unjust to compare them. But I’ll mention some here that really got me hooked while enjoying them. BooksThe Time Ships” by Stephen Baxter “The Illuminatus! Trilogy” by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson “The Tiger’s Fang” by Paul Twitchell “Creative Dreaming” by Patricia Garfield “Autobiography of a Yogi” by Paramahansa Yogananda Movies The Big Blue

With all the X-men and heroes running around. Us mortals would like some powers too. What one superpower would you choose?:
Faster than light speed 🙂

The genie comes out of the lamp and grants you one wish that will change the world. What would you wish for?:
All humans becoming truly happy within themselves = instant global eradication of psychopathy and narcissism = ever lasting planetary peace and love … etc. etc. Scrap the war machine and use all the money and resources being freed to improve the living standard for every single person on the planet. And then use the remaining resources to build big space ships to be used for exploring the universes, in peace, forever… The maths speak for itself, one day of military expenses is more than enough to make a small country rich… Scarcity is a construct…

Your opinions and viewpoints

Got any theories on how the universe blossomed into existence or on the rationale of life? Are we in the matrix? Did god knit a hologram?:
I think there is no consensus singular reality that all of us can or must fit into. It’s all subjective to who, where and when we are. The word “reality” screws with our minds since it’s a grave misconception implying a singular monolithic “truth”. The Kybalion was a pleasant discovery as it consciously deals with creation from a frequency vibrational resonance perspective in a way that definitely resonate with my view of life.

In an era where most people bear a close resemblance to sandpaper, it’s easy to snap. What are your dislikes/pet peeves/frustrations?:
All types of religious evangelism. Inquisitive science. The word Politician defined Poly = many Tic (en) = Blod sucking worm

How do you connect to the spiritual side of yourself?:
Making and playing music for starters…

Your relationship with psychedelics

Creativity and psychedelics work together. Do you agree? Why/Why not?:
Agree. For example, DMT is naturally released in the body just when we die… I guess nature produced psychedelics in all it’s various forms for a reason. Creativity definitely is deeply connected with it. And it’s amazing how the shamans tell stories about how they were shown in dreams and by nature which plants to use among millions to choose from.

Any work/pieces that were inspired by entheogens?:
Yes, certainly there are…

Are you pro-weed culture? Why do you think the majority of the population goes against the green?:
Does being “pro-weed culture” mean that one is supporting a certain type of life style? The only “culture” I do encourage is to let people do whatever they want as long as we don’t do harm to other people, nature or force our own believes onto others. Live and let live… And I don’t agree that the majority of the population is against marijuana. Obviously you haven’t been in Spain lately 🙂 Current statistics indicate, quite interestingly, a liberalization trend.

Advice for the readers and fans

At the end of the ride, everyone’s looking for some form of success (tangible or not), what does success mean to you?:
To me it means to come to terms with the music creating process and attitude towards what it means in ones life. After many years (my whole life actually) of consistently playing and creating music, I realized that I am what I want to be. And I feel, professionally speaking, that potential employers of my services sense the degree of self conviction.
