Dear Moritz, thanks a lot for this interesting question! You have to know that underground works just like coolness: It‘s only possible if a vast part of the population is not a part of it, it can only exist as a very small group that is different from the majority. To put it differently, your degree of coolness is always defined by the amount of uncool people, and the degree of underground by the amount of people who don‘t even know about it. Cool people are simply cool, and the same goes for the underground – but there can only be so many people who feel that, because of the self-concept, the identity and all that.
